Heavy and large-scale plate work
At Oskarshamnsvarvet there is also a long tradition of working on subcontracts made from steel and sheet metal. Since the mid-twentieth century we have expanded the subcontracting component of our operation in order to achieve more efficient use of both personnel and equipment throughout the year.
Our specialist expertise acquired from working on boats means that we have the equipment required for large and heavy plate work within the industrial sector.
This is no idle boast that we regard plate of thicknesses of less than 5 mm as "thin plate", but it is just that we specialise in working with large and heavy components - for example, press frames weighing 96 tonnes and chassis for aircraft towing tractors.
For the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Co., we provide maintenance of the equipment at their experimental laboratory, which is located next to our site here at the port. We have also built a vacuum welding chamber for sealing the copper capsules used for final storage of spent nuclear fuel.
For Oskarshamns Kraftgrupp, or OKG, we have built large storage boxes for low-level nuclear waste that is to be scrapped, such as tools etc.

These boxes are to be opened after 50 years, once their contents have become less radioactive. We have manufactured 15 of these boxes in various sizes using 150 mm-thick plate. An empty box weighs about 30 tonnes. In 2009 and 2010 we will be supplying another forty boxes of this kind to Forsmark and Oskarshamn.
